Non-Traditional Media would be in the dark ages without computers!
If you aren’t already, you’ll become proficient at downloading digital images from cameras and the net, altering them in PhotoShop, and using them as the basis for layered digital artworks.
You’ll need to maintain your workspace on our computer network carefully. Our files take up a lot of precious space, so delete files that you’re not going to use, or ones that have been evaluated (but keep some for a final portfolio – watch/listen for details!)
Folders
I collect your work for evaluation and critiquing using a computer program. Computers programs are dumb – they only do what they’re told to do, not what you wish they’d do! That means if I ask you to save some scans in the folder AWT3/Pinhole, that’s the only place they’ll be found. Humans know that if you made a folder named AWT 3/Pinhole Work, that’s where the scans would be, but not a computer program. Please name things exactly as instructed!
Start by making a folder named AWT3 in your login space i.e. the place you are when you first log in and run “My Documents”, also known as your G drive. Everything to do with this course must be stored in sub-folders of the AWT3 folder.
Each assignment will include a specific folder to store your files in. I’ll give you clear instructions as to what should be where. Sadly, you’ll lose marks if I can’t find your work easily, or if there’s tons of extraneous junk when I collect it.
Internet
You know the drill… appropriate use only. There are tons of fantastic resources out there for this course – take advantage of them! There are also tons of fascinating but irrelevant (or brain-numbing) sites. Specifically, don’t waste your class time watching YouTube videos, doing personal email or Facebook etc.
Some Don’ts:
Using the computer network inappropriately can result in loss of your login, or worse, as specified in your agenda. It also annoys me, which won’t do your performance appraisal marks any good!
